The Gingerland Theatre Company Finds Home in Corona, CA
Corona, CA., February 26th, 2003: When musicians Susanne Spirit and Rebecca Norris first met last year
in an artist's fellowship at Crossroad's Church, neither imagined that their
encounter would soon lead to the founding of an exciting new theatre company.
After a few months of hoping and scheming they formed the Gingerland Theatre
Company, backed by a dream of bringing community members of all ages together in
the name of art. The Gingerland Company's debut season will begin this coming
June, starting with Broadway's The Secret Garden
The Gingerland Company is the long-awaited brain-child of Susanne Spirit, who
has dreamed of starting such a production group in her community for many
years. Susanne holds theatre and film production degrees from UCLA, where she
was heavily involved in directing and producing stage plays and musicals. She
is also an accomplished singer and songwriter, with several albums completed and
another one on the way. Recently moved here from Los Angeles, she hopes to
enrich this community with her experience and passion for theatre.
Rebecca Norris, the musical director of the Gingerland Company, has been
actively involved in the community for years. As a private music instructor and
an accompanist for local school choirs, churches, and retirement homes, she has
seen first hand the joy that music can bring, especially to children. Her first
musical direction experience came from Christian Youth Theatre of Corona (CAT),
a local children's theatre group where she worked on five full-length musicals.
She will graduate in May from Cal State Fullerton with her B.F.A. in
Entertainment Art.
Susanne and Rebecca are now gearing up for their second weekend of auditions for
The Secret Garden. Auditions will take place March 15th at the Fender
Museum of the Arts, another community force aiming to rejuvenate Corona's
artistic side. The Secret Garden opens June 6th, 2003. Friday and Sunday's
shows will be held at the Fender Museum and the Saturday night show will be held at
the Crossroad's
Christian Church, in their 3500-seat auditorium.
"Doors have opened for us everywhere with this project: the timing is right, and
this city is ready for first-class theatre," said Rebecca, pleasantly surprised
by the overwhelming welcome the Gingerland Company has received. "It's amazing
how much talent there is in this city; just not actors, but production artists
as well." The large-scale production requires a crew of talented artists on and
off stage, including positions in set and costume design, many of which are
still available.
